Our client operates a high-volume distribution business where hundreds of customer orders must be delivered every day across multiple regions. Although their ERP operations were managed within Oracle NetSuite, transportation planning remained a completely manual process.
Every morning, transport planners reviewed sales orders from different subsidiaries and warehouse locations, calculated truck capacities manually, determined delivery sequences based on personal experience, and recorded planning details using spreadsheets or paper. Since there was no centralized planning interface, planners constantly switched between multiple NetSuite records to gather order information, truck details, customer addresses, and driver availability.
As order volumes increased, manual transportation planning became inefficient, causing poor truck utilization, inefficient routes, higher fuel costs, and inconsistent planning. The client required an intelligent NetSuite solution to automate truck allocation, optimize routes, and centralize the entire planning process.

Manual planning could no longer support business growth
The existing planning process depended heavily on manual decision-making, making it slow, inconsistent, and difficult to scale. Transport planners spent hours reviewing sales orders, calculating truck capacities, assigning deliveries, and creating routes using spreadsheets and paper-based planning.
Without automated route optimization, trucks frequently traveled longer distances than necessary, resulting in higher transportation costs and delayed deliveries. The absence of a centralized planning interface also forced users to navigate multiple NetSuite pages, increasing planning time and the likelihood of human error.

A custom Single Page Application built inside NetSuite
To modernize the client's transportation planning process, our team developed a custom Single Page Application (SPA) within Oracle NetSuite. The application provides transport planners with a centralized dashboard to manage all transportation activities without switching between multiple NetSuite pages.
Based on the logged-in user's subsidiary and warehouse, the system automatically displays eligible Sales or Purchase Orders. Users can filter deliveries by date, date range, and location. Each order includes delivery details, items, and total shipment weight, while available trucks are loaded dynamically with driver details, capacity, depot location, and availability.
Using a drag-and-drop interface, planners assign deliveries to trucks, with real-time validation preventing weight limit violations. Once assignments are complete, the application sends shipment, truck, depot, and driver constraints to the Google Route Optimization API, which generates the most efficient route while respecting capacity and working-hour limits.
The optimized route is displayed on Google Maps, and planners can manually reorder stops or reassign deliveries when needed. After approval, the transportation plan is stored in custom NetSuite records for execution, reporting, and traceability, transforming a manual process into an intelligent, automated workflow within NetSuite.
