Overview

A modern Hyvä frontend on a proven Magento 2 foundation

The retailer approached us with a Magento 2 storefront that needed a modern frontend experience, improved performance and a more maintainable architecture. Its frontend relied on a heavier Magento theme structure and unnecessary JavaScript, and every new feature or design change took extra effort.

Maven Infotech rebuilt the storefront using the Hyvä Theme Framework, creating a modern, lightweight and responsive frontend while retaining the existing Magento 2 catalog, business logic and e-commerce foundation.

The project was more than a theme swap. We reworked the frontend architecture, rebuilt key storefront components, optimised the customer journey and made sure the new implementation could support future development.

The challenge

Functional, but hard to maintain and grow.

The existing Magento 2 storefront worked, but its frontend architecture created challenges for both customers and the development team.

As the store evolved, maintaining the existing theme and introducing new functionality became increasingly complex.

The goal was therefore not simply to give the website a new visual design.

The business needed a modern Magento 2 frontend architecture that would improve performance, simplify development and provide a better shopping experience.

Performance

A slow, heavy frontend loading JavaScript and CSS that not every page needed

Architecture

Older Magento frontend patterns meant working around existing overrides for every change

Mobile

Browsing, filtering, navigation and purchasing needed to work smoothly on every screen size

Maintenance

Accumulated customisations made changes risky and increased development and testing effort

Flexibility

New storefront components took considerable effort without a reusable component approach

Storefront rebuild

Five focus areas. One modern storefront.

Select an area to see how we rebuilt it.

Area 1 of 5

Responsive e-commerce experience

Responsive behaviour was a core requirement, not an extra step. Layouts were built for desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile, with special attention to product discovery, category navigation, filtering, product images, add-to-cart actions and cart management, for a consistent shopping experience on every device.

Technology stack

Magento 2 with Hyvä

A lightweight frontend on top of the existing Magento backend.

Frontend

Hyvä Theme Framework

A high-performance Magento 2 frontend framework, used to rebuild the customer-facing storefront without replacing Magento's backend functionality.

Interactivity

Alpine.js

Used for lightweight interactive functionality, replacing heavier JavaScript patterns.

Styling

Tailwind CSS

Used for responsive, utility-based styling and frontend component development.

E-commerce platform

Magento 2

The existing Magento 2 platform, catalog and business logic remained the core e-commerce foundation.

Backend

PHP & MySQL/MariaDB

PHP for Magento application logic and custom development, MySQL/MariaDB for Magento data storage.

Supporting technologies

Extensions, tooling & delivery

Magento extensions and integrations, Git, Node.js and frontend build tooling, with CDN, caching and SSL/TLS where applicable.

Our approach

From discovery to launch.

Twelve workstreams, grouped into five phases.

  1. Phase 1

    Discovery

We analysed the catalog, navigation, listing and detail pages, search, cart, checkout, accounts, custom components, integrations and performance, separating what could be retained from what needed custom Hyvä development.

  2. Phase 2

    Hyvä & components

We set up the Hyvä theme, Tailwind CSS, Alpine.js and staging, then built reusable components for product cards, filters, navigation, modals, forms and cart interactions instead of carrying over legacy code.

  3. Phase 3

    Storefront rebuild

We rebuilt product listing and detail pages, the cart and checkout, and adapted custom Magento functionality such as advanced filtering, search, product comparison and availability, so the business kept important features while gaining Hyvä's frontend architecture.

  4. Phase 4

    Performance & SEO

We optimised JavaScript, CSS, images and assets, and preserved URLs, metadata, internal linking and structured data to protect organic search performance.

  5. Phase 5

    Testing & launch

Functional, responsive, browser and performance testing, staging validation, production deployment and post-launch monitoring reduced the risk of critical issues.

Key technical improvements

From legacy frontend to modern Hyvä

The migration delivered improvements across several areas of the storefront architecture.

Frontend: Hyvä-based architecture

Before, the storefront ran on a legacy Magento theme structure. It now runs on a Hyvä-based architecture with less unnecessary frontend complexity.

JavaScript: lightweight Alpine.js

Heavier frontend dependencies were replaced with lightweight Alpine.js interactions.

Styling: Tailwind CSS

The traditional Magento styling approach was replaced with structured, utility-based Tailwind CSS.

Components: reusable by design

Theme-specific customisations gave way to reusable frontend components that can be shared across catalog pages.

Mobile: mobile-focused design

Instead of adapting a desktop theme, the storefront was designed responsively with mobile as a core requirement.

Performance: optimised delivery

Higher frontend overhead was reduced through minification, less unused CSS, lazy loading and efficient asset loading.

Maintenance & development

Complex theme overrides were replaced by a cleaner component structure, making frontend changes faster to develop and easier to maintain.

The outcome

A storefront built for performance and maintainability

By rebuilding the storefront around Hyvä, we created a cleaner, modern frontend while keeping Magento 2 as the underlying e-commerce platform.

Speed

A faster frontend foundation with less unnecessary complexity and a performance-focused storefront

Mobile

A more consistent shopping experience across desktop, tablet and mobile devices

Maintainability

A component-based architecture that makes it easier to maintain features and add new ones

Workflow

A modern development workflow built on Hyvä, Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS

Scalability

A scalable storefront architecture. The new foundation is ready for future features, integrations and e-commerce growth, with a better shopping experience for customers.

Why Hyvä for Magento 2? Its lightweight frontend, component-based development, Alpine.js interactions and Tailwind CSS help address frontend performance, mobile experience, development complexity, theme maintainability, technical debt and future scalability.
