Magento 2 performance optimisation for a complex B2B commerce platform

A faster Magento 2 platform for complex B2B commerce

Quote submission30–40 sec~5 sec
Open quotes7–9 sec3–4 sec
Product pages5–7 sec~3 sec
Price list~20 sec~10 sec

A Dutch supplier of building, landscaping and outdoor materials was operating a highly customised Magento 2 e-commerce platform serving both B2B and B2C customers.

The biggest issue was quote submission, which could take 30–40 seconds.

The platform had grown into a complex digital commerce ecosystem, supporting multiple brands, customer-specific pricing, large product catalogues, customised B2B workflows and deep NetSuite ERP integration.

As the amount of data and business logic increased, some of the platform's most important workflows became increasingly slow.

Maven Infotech was brought in to identify the underlying performance bottlenecks and improve the platform without compromising the B2B functionality the business depended on.

Rather than treating the project as a simple frontend upgrade, we approached it as a broader Magento 2 performance optimisation project covering the database, backend processing, B2B workflows, ERP integration and customer-facing experience.

The challenge

When B2B complexity started affecting performance

The platform had evolved over time and accumulated a significant amount of business logic.

This combination made performance optimisation more challenging than simply improving a standard Magento storefront.

Several B2B pages required multiple seconds to process, while quote submission could take as long as 30–40 seconds.

The objective was therefore not to remove functionality or simplify the business processes.

It was to make the existing Magento architecture work more efficiently.

It needed to support:

  • Multiple brands and Magento websites
  • B2B and B2C customer journeys
  • Customer groups and customer-specific pricing
  • Customer-specific product availability
  • Large product catalogues
  • ERP-driven product and customer data
  • Quotes and call-offs
  • Custom delivery processes
  • Complex checkout calculations
  • NetSuite synchronisation
Measurement

Finding the real performance bottlenecks

We started with measurement rather than assumptions.

The team analysed the slowest customer-facing workflows and traced the processing behind them to understand where time was being spent.

The optimisation process included:

  • Identifying slow pages and B2B workflows
  • Measuring execution times
  • Inspecting PHP and Magento processing
  • Analysing expensive SQL queries
  • Reviewing Magento collections and data retrieval
  • Examining ERP and API calls
Backend

Optimising the Magento 2 backend

A significant part of the project focused on the Magento database and backend processing.

The team analysed the SQL queries behind slow operations and identified areas where Magento was performing unnecessary or repeated work.

The optimisation included:

  • Reducing unnecessary joins
  • Improving filtering logic
  • Eliminating repeated database requests
  • Reusing previously retrieved data
  • Reducing unnecessary Magento collection operations
  • Improving custom module queries
  • Optimising data retrieval for complex B2B workflows

Particular attention was given to B2B dashboards, order-related pages and ERP-driven functionality.

By reducing unnecessary processing at the database and application levels, Magento could handle important customer-facing operations more efficiently.

B2B workflows

Making everyday B2B workflows faster

B2B dashboards often involve more complex processing than standard e-commerce pages.

Customers may need to access quotes, invoices, orders, price lists and delivery information while Magento simultaneously applies customer-specific business rules.

We analysed and optimised key areas including:

  • Open quotes
  • Invoices
  • Orders
  • Price lists
  • Deliveries
  • Product searches

The goal was to reduce the amount of unnecessary data processing during the initial customer request.

Instead of making Magento process everything before responding, the workflows were optimised to retrieve and process the information actually required by the customer.

This improved response times across several important B2B areas.

Background jobs

Moving heavy processing into the background

Not every operation needs to happen while a customer is waiting.

Some recurring and resource-intensive processes were moved to Magento cron-based background processing.

This included:

  • NetSuite synchronisation
  • Call-off processing
  • Data updates
  • Scheduled business operations

This created a better separation between customer-facing requests and background processing.

For example, call-off processing could be handled periodically instead of requiring every calculation to be completed during the customer's browser request.

By moving appropriate work away from synchronous requests, the platform could remain more responsive while complex operations continued in the background.

NetSuite

Streamlining Magento 2 and NetSuite integration

NetSuite ERP is an important part of the platform's business infrastructure.

Magento and NetSuite exchange information including:

  • Customers
  • Contacts
  • Products
  • Product attributes
  • Pricing
  • Orders
  • Delivery information
  • B2B data

The integration uses SuiteTalk, SuiteQL and NetSuite APIs.

We reviewed the data-intensive operations involved in the integration and looked for opportunities to reduce unnecessary ERP and API processing.

Where possible, related records were collected and processed in batches rather than repeatedly requesting individual records.

This reduced unnecessary ERP requests and improved the efficiency of Magento–NetSuite synchronisation.

B2B extensions

Extending Magento for B2B requirements

Standard Magento functionality could not cover every requirement of the business.

Custom Magento development was therefore used to support specific B2B workflows while keeping the implementation aligned with the existing platform architecture.

Customer-specific product access

Different business customers may have access to different products.

Magento customer information is combined with ERP data to determine which products are available to individual customers.

This allows the platform to apply customer-specific product visibility and purchasing rules.

Customer-specific pricing

B2B customers require pricing that can differ from standard B2C pricing.

The platform takes several factors into account, including:

  • Customer account
  • Customer group
  • ERP pricing information
  • Product configuration
  • VAT requirements
  • Website/store context

This allows the same Magento installation to support different commercial models and customer experiences.

A faster quick order experience

B2B customers often know exactly which product they need.

Instead of browsing a large catalogue, they can use a dedicated Quick Order workflow.

The search functionality supports:

  • Product SKUs
  • Product names
  • Synonyms
  • Alternative search terms
  • Common spelling variations

The database operations behind the search were also optimised to reduce unnecessary queries.

This makes the workflow better suited to customers who regularly purchase products or place larger orders.

B2B checkout contact management

The checkout was extended to support business-specific contact requirements.

Customers can provide separate:

  • Order contact person
  • Delivery contact person

These details are connected to dedicated fields on the corresponding NetSuite order.

This creates a direct link between the information captured during Magento checkout and the information required by the ERP system.

Maintainability

Building for maintainability and future growth

Custom functionality was implemented through dedicated Magento 2 modules rather than modifying Magento core functionality.

The custom development covers areas such as:

  • B2B product restrictions
  • NetSuite integration
  • Customer-specific business logic
  • Quick order
  • Call-offs
  • Delivery workflows
  • Checkout customisation
  • Contact person management
  • Performance optimisation

Where applicable, Magento dependency injection and service-contract architecture were used to keep custom functionality separated from Magento core code.

This approach provides a cleaner and more maintainable foundation for future Magento development and upgrades.

Hyvä frontend

A modern Magento storefront with Hyvä

The storefront uses Hyvä Theme, Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS together with Hyvä Checkout.

The existing custom Magento functionality was adapted to work within the Hyvä architecture rather than relying on legacy frontend implementations.

The implementation included:

  • Custom Hyvä templates
  • Alpine.js components
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Hyvä-compatible Magento components
  • Hyvä checkout functionality
  • Custom Magento functionality adapted for Hyvä

For this project, Hyvä was therefore part of a broader Magento modernisation effort rather than simply a visual redesign.

Multi-brand

Supporting multiple brands on one Magento platform

The Magento installation supports multiple business environments and brands from a shared platform.

Individual websites and stores can maintain their own:

  • Catalogue configuration
  • Customer rules
  • Pricing
  • Design
  • Checkout behaviour
  • Business logic

This provides the flexibility required to operate multiple brand experiences while maintaining a shared Magento foundation.

Business impact

What the optimisation changed for the business

The technical improvements translated into a more responsive B2B e-commerce experience.

Customers can find products faster, access account information more efficiently and spend less time waiting for complex quote and ordering workflows.

The improved separation between customer-facing requests and background processing also means suitable operations can run automatically without unnecessarily blocking customer requests.

For the development team, dedicated Magento modules provide a cleaner foundation for maintaining and extending the platform.

Most importantly, the existing Magento ecosystem could be improved without replacing the platform or removing the business functionality that makes the B2B operation unique.
