SAP Integration Suite Explained: API Management, Cloud Integration & Event Mesh

SAP Integration Suite is SAP's cloud-native integration platform (iPaaS) on SAP BTP. It brings API management, event-driven integration, prepackaged integration content, low-code tooling, and governance into a single platform — and it's the direct replacement for SAP PI/PO ahead of PI/PO's 2027 end-of-maintenance deadline. Cloud Integration — The Core Engine

Cloud Integration is where most day-to-day integration work happens: building and running iFlows (integration flows) that connect systems, transform data between formats, and route messages. SAP publishes hundreds of prepackaged integration content packages for common SAP-to-SAP and SAP-to-third-party scenarios, which cuts down the amount you have to build from scratch compared to a typical PI/PO project.

API Management — Governing and Securing Your APIs

API Management is the layer that turns an integration flow into a governed, reusable API. It handles OAuth-based authentication, rate limiting, usage analytics, and a developer portal where internal or external teams can discover and consume your APIs — capabilities PI/PO simply didn't have natively.

Event Mesh & Advanced Event Mesh — Real-Time, Event-Driven Integration

Event Mesh lets systems publish and subscribe to business events instead of waiting on point-to-point calls. A sales order system can publish "purchase order created"; a warehouse system can publish "stock level changed"; a finance system can publish "payment posted." Any number of subscribers can react to those events in real time, without being directly wired to the system that raised them. That decoupling is what makes event-driven architectures easier to scale and extend than the largely synchronous patterns PI/PO relied on. Open Connectors — Reaching Beyond SAP

Open Connectors provides prebuilt connectors to a wide range of non-SAP applications — CRM, e-commerce, HR, and other SaaS platforms — so connecting your SAP landscape to the rest of your software stack doesn't mean building a custom adapter every time. Integration Advisor & Trading Partner Management — B2B/EDI Made Easier

For B2B and EDI integration, Integration Advisor helps design and manage content-based routing and mapping, while Trading Partner Management handles partner onboarding, communication channels, and partner profiles. Together, they reduce the manual, per-partner mapping work that made B2B interfaces one of the more labor-intensive parts of running PI/PO.

How It All Works Together: An Example

Take a typical order-to-cash scenario: a customer places an order in a non-SAP e-commerce platform, reached through Open Connectors. That order flows into SAP S/4HANA via Cloud Integration. Once the order is created, Event Mesh publishes an event that triggers downstream processes — inventory checks, warehouse notifications — without those systems being directly wired to the order system. Meanwhile, API Management exposes order status as a governed API that the e-commerce platform, or a partner, can query securely. One platform, four capabilities, working as one integration layer instead of a chain of separately maintained point-to-point connections.
